Outline of Annual Research Achievements

1. I participated in an online conference to share my preliminary research work and presented a paper, titled, "
"Educational aspirations, brokerage, and migration infrastructure: facilitating Nepali student mobility to Japan" at the 2020 KINDAS Research Group 2 Seminar (2nd) “International Relations in the Himalayan region” in October 2020.

2. I also presented my research paper at an online seminar titled "Mobility and Co-existence" organized by Nagoya University on January 27th 2021.

Both of the above research activities allowed me to connect with scholars and students of migration and mobilities studies. The discussion post-seminar was especially helpful to incorporate feedback/suggestions as I proceed onto my ethnographic fieldwork among Nepali international students enrolled in various nihongo gakko throughout Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 global pademic, I could not visit my research sites in Nepal as well as within Japan.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Based on my preliminary research, including literature review, online conversation with migration and mobilities studies scholars, online seminar and conference participation, the next step for my research is to attend nihongo gakko, where many Nepali students are enrolled or previously completed their Japanese language education. Because the majority of Nepali students enter Japan through admission into nihongo gakko that sponsor student-visas, attending language classes with Nepali students is an important next research step, methodologically and analytically. At nihongo gakko, I will also conduct survey questionnaire, schedule interviews (online as well as face-to-face) with students, educators, and administrative staff.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the pandemic and international travel bans, I could not travel abroad for research. I will be using last fiscal year's amount to this fiscal year for the following purpose: in-depth interviews with informants (honorarium payment), attendance at nihongo gakko (tuition and participation fees), Japanese-to English translation of research articles related to my research topic, and resume research travels domestically and internationally (including Nepal for fieldwork) and participation in the international academic conference (American Anthropological Association) in the United States.
