Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I could not conduct any planned fieldwork in schools in China, Taiwan or Japan in the second year of this project, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting domestic and international travel restrictions. But I was able to update the review of literature on social justice and citizenship education in Asian contexts. I was also able to use the stay-at-home time to write up and publish two articles based on the data collected in the first year - one on the discourse of social justice in citizenship education in Japan and China and the other on the politics behind the discourse of social justice in citizenship education in China - in two international refereed journals. The two articles are perhaps the first ones in the English-language literature on citizenship education for social justice in China and Japan.

Reason

I could not conduct planned field work in schools in China, Taiwan or Japan due to the pandemic and resulting domestic and international travel restrictions.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Depending on whether schools allow visitors in the changing situation of the pandemic, I plan to start the school fieldwork in Japan in the third year. Depending on whether international travel restrictions will be lifted, I plan to resume the school fieldwork in China and Taiwan as well. If the situation does not ameliorate, I may have to extend the research period of this project.

Causes of Carryover

I was unable to conduct fieldwork in domestic and overseas schools due to the pandemic and resulting travel restrictions. If the situation allows in the new year, I plan to resume the fieldwork to catch up what was left undone in the second year and continue to what is planned for the third year.
