Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I could not conduct any fieldwork in this year due to the continuing travel and visit restrictions in the planned third and last year of this project. That is the reason why I have extended the project for another year, hoping that the restrictions will be somehow lifted in the near future. Drawing on the findings of this project, I (1) chaired and presented at a webinar on citizenship and social justice education in Asia that involved speakers from Taiwan, India and Japan on 4 February 2021; (2) delivered a speech on social justice education in Japan and China at the symposium of the Japan Citizenship Education Forum on 3 October 2021; and (3) conducted an online public seminar on social justice education in Japan and China at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 14 January 2022. In this year I also continued to update the literature review of the field and was able to collect textbooks and other materials for further analysis.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
I could not conduct fieldwork in Taiwan or China due to the travel and visit restrictions. This impeded my comparative work in Japanese schools, the access to which was also difficult due to the on and off of Covid-19 emergency declarations.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I keep the hope that I can conduct some fieldwork in the extended year. In the meantime, I will focus more on document analysis to alleviate the impact of not being able to visit and observe in person on the scene.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Overseas fieldwork has been suspended for two years because of travel restrictions. I will resume the overseas fieldwork if travel restrictions are lifted in next year. As I have focus more on document analysis, I need to purchase the latest literature and overseas document materials.
