Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The strength and stability of simulated quartz-feldspar faults was tested under P-T conditions pertaining to the upper 18 km of the crust, through experiments at AIST and at Tohoku university. All mechanical data show a friction coefficient of 0.7-0.8 and velocity strengthening behavior. Fragments of samples deformed at the Tohoku lab were investigated using incident light and scanning electron microscopy. These show evidence for localized shear deformation and local melt generation.
