Project Period (FY) 2019-04-01 – 2022-03-31
KeywordsSpatial steel corrosion / Finite element analysis / Correlation of corrosion
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

More computational finite element (FE) analysis was conducted to evaluate the structural performance of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams with multiple rebars in terms of load bearing capacity and ductility. It was found that the 3D FE models considering only correlation coefficient of steel rebars can provide good estimation of loading capacity but still somewhat overestimate the ductility of the corroded RC beams. After considering the effect of localized corrosion pits on the constitutive stress-strain curves of the rebars based on the previous studies, the better agreement between ductility of corroded RC beams and simulated RC beam were obtained. Moreover, the reliability analysis of RC beams shows that it is necessary to consider the spatial steel corrosion on the structural performance of RC beams.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

The experiment research in 2020 was significantly hindered due to the spread of Covid-19. To prevent the risk of infection, the experiment conducted by the research team which include a gathering of many people was halted, and the research facility at the University was closed for the first few months of the fiscal year. Later to the end of the year, the research facility was hardly fully operated, causing a substantial delay in the experiment.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

It is planned in this year that more specimens will be made and corroded with sm current densities for the investigations of the different spatial steel corrosion in comparison to those corroded earlier with large current density. After the corrosion tests are completed (probably next year), the statistic analysis of the spatial steel corrosion under the effects of current density will be derived, and the approximate model of spatial steel corrosion will be made and incorporated into the FE model for reliability estimation of corroded RC beams.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the pandemic, the research activities were significantly hindered. A few planned conferences were canceled since the oversea travels were prohibited. The remaining amount of the fund will be allocated for this year and utilized for the purchase of materials and tools for experiments, supporting fund for journal publications, and virtual conference attendances.
