Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This research aims to develop a low-damage, high redundancy vibration controllable spine frame system. In the third year, finite element analyses were carried out to reproduce the cyclic loading tests results, and then extensive dynamic analysis of buildings using the proposed system were conducted. Generally, the cyclic loading tests results were represented by the numerical models with high accuracy. It was found that the performance of steel dampers was rather complex due to the variation of fixation condition and material properties such as post yield stiffness ratio, while the behaviors of the post-tensioning steel strands and the uplifting mechanism were comparatively easy to reproduce. The verified numerical modeling methods used for the test specimens was adopted for modeling low-rise steel frame buildings with the proposed system. Compared to the preliminary time-history analyses, the strands configurations, the range of damper amounts, the variety and intensity of input ground motions were much extended. Furthermore, the system performance was evaluated not only by the peak and residual drift, but also taking account of the peak inter-story velocity and floor accelerations. Based on the analyses results, the advantages and limitations of the proposed system were well discussed. The design considerations inlcuding appropriate engineering demands of main components were suggested.
