KeywordsInference / Sleep
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I successfully established the sleep-dependent transitive inference behavior paradigm as a model for creative problem solving. Moreover, I identified the brain region (Anterior cingulate cortex, ACC) which is necessary for the emergence of the correct inference. Furthermore, I defined the brain circuit that is responsible for inference emergence during sleep. Now, I am investigating the neuronal dynamic mechanism of the emergence of inference during sleep by Ca2+ imaging technique.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

My progress is going well according to my plan. Identifying the mechanism of inferential reasoning using Ca2+ imaging technique is taking much time because of technical complexity of this technique and I have to record the brain waves during sleep. The subsequent experiments were running well because I am working with my full power and capabilities.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

My future plan is to identify the neuronal computations underlying the emergence of inference during sleep by Ca2+ imaging technique. I will extract the ensembles (activity patterns) corresponding to the inference and their temporal dynamics to dissect the mechanism by which the inference information is emerged. Then, I will establish the causal link between the emerged ensembles during sleep and the inference performance by combining ultra-thin Fluorescence Endoscope Imaging System (U-FEIS) with multi-independent light stimulation system (MILSS).

Causes of Carryover

There are two reasons
1- The protocol for the transitive inference paradigm is taking long time for each animal (one month) and I have several groups of experiments
2- Due to the spread of coronavirus, some of the experiments were postponed. My plan is using the remaining money to purchase some devices for investigating the underlying mechanism for the emergence of inference.
