Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The invited paper to the Journal of Clinical Medicine was a prospective study leveraging data (N=8062) from the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study that revealed significant insights into cardiorespiratory fitness and glucose regulation. The study employed a newly developed algorithm to estimate cardiorespiratory fitness (eCRF) using routine clinical data in electronic health records without requiring physical activity or exercise knowledge. This eCRF was effectively used to predict abnormal blood glucose levels, with findings indicating that higher eCRF is associated with a lower risk of developing abnormal glucose levels. The conclusions were comparable for clinically measured cardiorespiratory fitness. Notably, each one-unit increase in eCRF was correlated with a 4% reduction in the risk of abnormal glucose, highlighting the potential of eCRF as a valuable tool for predicting abnormal blood glucose independent of body mass index or waist girth. Currently an invited Review paper on eCRF and Metabolic Health Outcomes is under review by a peer reviewed journal. A series of new studies evaluating various mortality and morbidity outcomes are being planned for the near future.
