Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research is about understanding what people in DR Congo think and know about Ebola, which is critical for implementing practical actions, including integrating the unmet needs of the population. In other words, we conducted knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) surveys to help identify misconceptions that were potential obstacles to the activities (including health education and communication) that were implemented during the 10th outbreak that broke out in North Kivu in 2018. This year, we collected nationwide data on Ebola-KAP (peak phase data). We carried out field surveys in 5 regional blocks (Kongo central, Kasai, Kivu, Kisangani, and Katanga). Our preliminary findings were presented at the 78th annual meeting of the Japan Society of Public Health in Kochi Prefecture.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We made effort to grasp the whole picture of the problem during the peak phase of Ebola. Surveys were conducted in five regional blocks instead of two as initially planned. We were able to collect both qualitative and quantitative data.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Research plan for the fiscal year 2020 onward. 2020: Qualitative data analysis and writing manuscript. Quantitative data cleansing, quantitative data analysis, report results to Congolese authorities and conference presentation. In addition, we will conduct surveys of Ebola-KAP after the outbreak peak to assess the public confidence in the health system after the Ebola outbreak peak in two regional blocks (Kongo central and Katanga). 2021: Conduct surveys of Ebola-KAP after the outbreak peak to assess the public confidence in the health system after the Ebola outbreak peak in the three remaining regional blocks (Kasai, Kivu, and Kisangani). 2022: Data entry, data cleansing, manuscript writing, conference presentation and final report writing.
