Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The aim of this study was to reveal the current practice of self-care support provided by ICU nurses to light-sedated mechanically ventilated patients .An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted on ICU nurses belonging to randomly selected ICUs accredited as the specialist-training institutes by the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine. The questionnaire consisted of 16 items of tooth brushing, 8 items of facial wiping with a towel,11 items of shaving, and 8 items of combing the hair. Each item was answered dichotomously: i.e. "doing" or "not doing". Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. 517 ICU nurses responded.Only 7 items of the self-care support were reported to be done by more than a half of the nurses, of which 5 items were related to "facial wiping with a towel" (implementation rate 60-67%). Most of the items related to "tooth brushing", "shaving", and "combing the hair " were reported to be done by 50% or less of the nurses.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
