Outline of Final Research Achievements

driving cessation or driving-related anxiety among community-dwelling older people was significantly associated with poorer physical functions and cognitive functions compared with those in current drivers or driving-related non-anxiety drivers. Furthermore, Worse performance for identifying sweet odors, an inability to identify some specific odors (menthol, rose or Japanese orange) were associated with worse mobility, lower muscle function or mild brain atrophy among community-dwelling older adults.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

高齢化に伴う社会問題の解決が喫緊の課題となっている現代において、高齢期の健康を維持するためのエビデンスは必要不可欠である。本研究は、認知機能の維持や低下に係る因子を日常生活に係る因子から検討した。社会問題の一つである高齢期の車両の運転に際し、運転に不安がある者や運転を中止した者の身心機能を明らかにした。さらに、日常生活では気づきにくい、嗅覚機能の低下が、身心機能や脳萎縮と関連していることも明らかにした。本成果の一部は学会の論文賞を受賞しており、学術的にも社会的にも重要なエビデンスを提供できたものと考えている。
