Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During 2020 we managed to advance the field of dynamic distributed graph algorithms in several ways: We consider fundamental graph problems in a highly dynamic environment and showed that these problems can be solved in O(1) amortized time. Furthermore, we also considered smoothed analysis for the distributed dynamic setting. Not only is form of complexity analysis more realistic, but it allows us to overcome some pathological impossibility results. We believe that this directions of research will advance our understanding of distributed dynamic systems.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The project was slightly delayed due to the covid pandemic, which made it hard to meet in person. We did publish strong results, but I believe there is more to be done. Apart from the papers already published, together with my collaborators, we have some preliminary results about parametrized algorithms, population protocols and smoothed analysis. I hope to publish the above during 2021, completing the projet.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I plan to continue working on extending our results for the smoothed analysis framework setting, as this model of computation can be highly useful in modeling real world distributed systems. I aim to continue studying fundamental graph problems (such as load balancing) in the more realistic complexity measure. I plan to submit these results to leading conferences such as PODC and DISC.

Causes of Carryover |
I couldn't use the entire amount due to the covid pandemic. In 2021 I plan to use the budget for overseas travel. This face to face collaboration should speed up the progress of the project.
