2019 Fiscal Year Research-status Report

Development and Pilot Testing of a Standardized Method to Map Urban CO2 Emissions

Research Project

Project/Area Number 19K20497
Research InstitutionHiroshima University

Principal Investigator

SHARIFI AYYOOB  広島大学, 国際協力研究科, 助教 (50726239)

Project Period (FY) 2019-04-01 – 2022-03-31
KeywordsLocal climate zones / Urban / CO2 emissions
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I have started mapping the local climate zones of several selected cities. I have also communicated with several scholars and institutes to obtain data related to energy consumption to be used for carbon mapping. This involves data related to emission factors for different urban sectors that can later be used for calculating emissions. At the moment I am trying to test the accuracy of the developed local climate zone maps and overlay them with the energy consumption and CO2 emission distribution maps of selected cities to find out the associations between local climate zone type and emission patterns. Preliminary results show that the local climate zone system is a promising tool for predicting patterns of CO2 emissions in cities.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The project is going smoothly as planned. The main objective for the first year was to develop local climate zones for selected cities and to obtain the data necessary for mapping CO2 emissions. Both have progressed smoothly.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Next stage will be to collect the emission factors for different sectors and map the emissions. I also intend to hire a part time RA to help me with this task.

Causes of Carryover

I was supposed to hire a research assistant this year to help me with mapping process. I decided to do it during the next fiscal year. The carried over amount will mainly be used for that purpose and also for attending conferences. The budget originally allocated for FY 2020 will also be mainly used for hiring research assistants to do the overlay spatial analysis using geographic information system software tools and for travel to attend a related three-day workshop on carbon emission mapping that will be organized later this year in Kyoto or Tokyo.
