KeywordsModern Japanese History
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

While during this period my research activities were impacted by Covid-19, I have been able to pursue my overall goals. In 2020-21 I published two articles and co-edited a book (Transwar Asia: Ideologies, Institutions, Practices). These publications appeared in prestigious international journals and presses (Japan Forum, Bloomsbury Academic Press). I also presented at various scholarly conferences and workshops (mainly online) in Australia. Most importantly, I have continued working on my long-term project, a history of conservatism in Japan, 1920-1980. Access to archives and libraries has been limited, but I have been able to work through the sources that I had collected during earlier fieldwork. I foresee that I will be using these sources until early 2022, when I expect to be able to continue researching in archives in person.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

For my main research project, a history of Japanese conservatism, I have written the introduction and one chapter. This is in addition to other scholarly articles that I have completed in this period of time and which have helped me to further conceptualize my project. As a result, I am satisfied with the progress I have made in the past year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I have two main goals for the next year. First, to continue working on my book manuscript. I foresee eight chapters. I will need to conduct follow-up research for some chapters in various archives and libraries in Tokyo. Second, to be able to conduct this research, I need to apply for further financial support. My aim is to apply for more grants during the next year.

Causes of Carryover

Next year, I plan to use this amount to conduct research in archives in Tokyo
