Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this research project, I investigated the effect of yellow dust on birth outcomes in South Korea. I found that yellow dust has a negative effect on various birth outcomes (i.e., birth weight, low birth weight, prematurity, gestation length, etc.). Furthermore, I could observe that these effects are large in the first to fourth months of pregnancy.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究プロジェクトの意義は、越境大気汚染の黄砂を対象とし、その健康被害を明らかにした点にある。これまで経済学では、大気汚染の健康被害について数々の研究が蓄積されているものの、一国内または一地域内で発生する大気汚染を対象としていた。本研究プロジェクトによる成果は、今後、地球規模の環境問題に対処するための国際協力の枠組みの作りに貢献できると期待する。
