Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This fiscal year, I published an article in a major international journal on Japan's place in the 1880s global "first wave" of terrorism; the article draws from archival research and uses the concept of "global civil war" to examine the global intellectual history of what is known as the radicalization of the jiyuu minken undou;. I presented other research at two international conferences and received valuable feedback on my ideas and thinking. I continued my research on and drafting of my book manuscript from my base institution and was able to make a long-overdue research trip to Kyushu; I am working on putting together some of the results of that research trip in a new article. Finally, I focused especially on researching and drafting Chapter Seven of my book manuscript. These projects all relate to exploring the problem of "disorder" in Japan's revolutionary era from a comparative, history-of-ideas perspective.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The challenges of the pandemic and shifts in my own professional circumstances have delayed my book manuscript somewhat. New directions in my own research have further delayed the manuscript; I have spent time on publishing new findings and pursuing new, unexpected avenues of discovery that have come up in my work.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am now focused on drawing from my research in Kyushu to publish an article on the concept of "Counter-Enlightenment" as it does and does not apply to the Japanese experience. I am also seeking to pursue an unexpected research lead: I intend to investigate the role of the idea of "Africa" in the development of the radical Japanese civil-rights movement of the 1880s and, thereby, to examine the relationship between Japanese democratic imperialism in the 1880s and the contemporaneous European scramble for Africa.

Causes of Carryover |
With the reopening of global travel, I intend, circumstances permitting, to present my work at international conferences and receive feedback especially on the global, comparative dimensions of my work.
