Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research project examined the relationship between pluralistic legal practices, state-building, and the formation of identities along China's border regions (1880s-1940s). The analytical framework of this study provided a deeper understanding of the role of legal institutions in state-building practices along China's multiethnic borderlands. The results were presented at conferences in Japan, Europe, and North America. Drawing on untapped archival sources, I produced three journal articles. I am also completing a book manuscript that investigates how pluralistic legal practices impacted the conceptualization of the Chinese nation-state and molded national and ethnic identities in the Sino-Burmese borderlands during the first half of the twentieth century.
