Outline of Final Research Achievements |
1.By focusing my analysis on the the trade activity that the silkworm eggs company Kawajiri-gumi from Akita Prefecture performed via its branch office in in northern Italy, I shed some light on the impact that the decline in demand for Japanese silkworm eggs from Italian in the 1880s had on the treaty revision negotiations between Japan and Italy. 2.I examined the diplomatic activities conducted in Italy by the Japanese Minister Plenipotentiary to Italy Nabeshima Naohiro (in office between 1880 and 1882) and by his successor Asano Nagakoto (in office between 1882 and 1884). As a result, I come to the conclusion that that they played a strategic role in developing Japan-Italy treaty revision relations in line with Foreign Minister Inoue Kaoru’s foreign policy during the early years of Meiji era.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
