Outline of Final Research Achievements

I have partially completed digitalization of agricultural household surveys conducted in the early Showa period. Specifically, I have been organizing the descriptions of family roster, region and location information. The logbooks include handwritten descriptions of each household member's daily work (farming, sericulture, official duties, household chores, leisure time, etc.), and the hours worked. Although there were difficulties in reading the handwritten records, the process was carried out as efficiently as possible and information on household members, production and trading behaviors, leisure activities, division of labour within the household, employment of hired persons and their job descriptions were digitized.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

昭和恐慌の分析はこれまでも研究が行われてきたが、利用できるデータに限界があり、頑健な定量的手法に基づいた研究は少ないのが現状である。本研究では、これまでに使われてこなかったパネル・データとして「農家経済調査簿」を用いた。本データは、京都帝国大学によって収集され、近畿地方の104家計について、恐慌前を含む1927年から1933年の家計所得・資産・消費・農業経営状況、各家計構成員の毎日の労働内容・労働時間を含む詳細が網羅されている。本研究において申請者は、マイクロフィルムからスキャンされた全調査簿のPDFデータを分析可能な形にするために独自のデータベースを構築した。
