Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research project investigates bridge individuals and their bridging roles in multinational companies (MNCs) using quantitative methods. As the second year of this research project, I continued the research process from the first year and also expanded the topic and research subject according to the change of COVID-19. Integrating the first-year research project, I completed two conference papers further revealing the locally recruited parent country nationals (PCNLs) in Japanese subsidiaries. These papers were presented at three international conferences: AIB (Academy of International Business) annual meeting, AJBS (Association of Japanese Business Studies) annual meeting, and Academy of International Business Southeast Asia Regional Conference. One paper was selected as the Palgrave Macmillan AJBS Best Paper Award 2020 Finalist. In addition, due to the COVID-19 influence, I expanded the current research project to the virtual work environment. I conducted a cross-country project exploring how expatriates (one type of bridge individuals) with different host country language proficiencies have used different mechanisms to improve their virtual work adaptivity during COVID-19. I further revealed how language-related human resource (HR) practices could influence these mechanisms. Data were collected from 994 expatriates working in eight countries during the COVID-19 virtual work period. This paper has been completed and submitted to the International Journal of Human Resource Management.
