Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia is known to be difficult to treat and be a big obstacle to patients’ social involvement. There are multiple neural systems that relate to cognitive functions. The noradrenergic (NA) neurons of the locus coeruleus (LC) are one of the neural systems that relate cognitive functions. The LC-NA system which projects a wide area of the brain plays an important role in alertness. Although the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is known to play an important role in the shift of alertness modes, some previous studies have shown both anatomical and functional abnormality in the ACC in patients with schizophrenia. In order to estimate neural activity in the LC as well as the sympathetic and parasympathetic neural systems, the present study analyzed temporal complexity in pupil diameter which reflects the neural activation of the LC. The present study established the method to decode temporal complexity and asymmetricity of the right and left pupils.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
