Outline of Final Research Achievements

In our studies on fluorescent dyes, we found that compounds with phenolic hydroxy groups dissociate protons upon photoexcitation. We investigated photoreactions of compounds with phenolic hydroxy groups. We also developed fluorescent dyes with phenolic hydroxy groups and evaluated the physical properties of the dyes focusing on the excited states.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

色素を実際の有機反応に利用する目的で研究に取り組んだ。光反応では反応機構解明や現象の理解が、基底状態のみの化学に比べ難しいが、実験的および量子化学計算の両面から検討した。身近に用いられている蛍光色素を修飾し、新たな側面を見出す足がかりとなる研究を行なった。
