Outline of Annual Research Achievements

(1) Selection of research site: Three target area has been chosen; Addis Ababa (Piazza), Mekelle, and Sokota.
(2) Measurements and drawings: A case study building was chosen in Piazza, Addis Ababa. Plan, section, and elevation were made together with photographic records. The building is an excellent example of a heritage building in the area that is also being well used.
(3) Interview: Interview with residents, NGOs, and local experts were made to clarify the actual situation of heritage buildings. Discussion with Wag Development Association in Sokota was especially fruitful.
(4) Japanese Tea House: The team also researched the Japanese tea house at the presidential palace in Addis Ababa, which will be referred to as a contrast case to the central research theme.
(5) Research outputs: There are some delays. A presentation has been submitted to AIJ in March 2020.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

(1) Selection of research site: The research site has been chosen carefully through discussions and fieldwork. The difficulty of finding mutual networks remain. The team will work on this team in the coming year.
(2) Measurements and drawings: The drawings and photos were prepared by the students. An interview with the owner will be carried out in the coming year.
(3) Interview: The number of interviews was limited, but each has given the insight to structure the next step of research.
(4) Japanese Tea House: An additional research was done during the fieldwork in February 2020.
(5) Research outputs: International conferences were canceled during the spring of 2020 due to COVID-19. Reports will be made in the coming years.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

(1) Literature research: Some books and documents collected during the fieldwork of FY 2019 will be reviewed. The team will need to organize the definition of heritage and mutual network in Ethiopia.
(2) Architectural/ Urban Research: The team will focus on making base maps for the target area in the first half of the fiscal year 2020. Through several online meetings with research collaborators, the team will create the framework for the next fieldwork.
(3) Community Research: For the urban mutual network, the initial idea was to focus on residents, but it may need to be treated in a broader context.
(4) Research outputs: The work will continue through the coming years.

Causes of Carryover

Since the research period was limited to six months this year, the team decided to take more time to select the relevant tools to use during the fieldwork.
