Research Abstract

本計画では、顕生代5.5億年間におきた大量絶滅の中でも特に規模が大きかった２つの事件、すなわち2.5億年前の古生代末（P-T境界）事件と5.5億年前の原生代末（V-C境界）事件について、原因およびプロセスの解明を試みた。絶滅当時の汎地球規模環境変動の実態を解明するため、欧州北部、中国南部、および日本において野外調査およびボーリングによって採取した岩石試料を用いて様々な化学分析を行なった。とくに炭素・酸素・ストロンチウム同位体比を測定し、次のような複数の新知見を得た。１）P-T境界事件の最初の絶滅事件直前に、南中国の大陸棚外側斜面に酸素欠乏水塊が出現したこと、また２）その水塊の中で嫌気呼吸が卓越したこと、３）さらにそれに先んじるペルム紀中期後半には高い炭素同位体比を持つ海水がグローバル規模で出現したことが明らかになった。いずれも最初に生物多様性が大きく低下させた環境変動の特徴を示唆している。
一方，V－C境界の直後に出現・多様化した小型有殻動物の化石(SSF)を多産する中国雲南省のリン酸塩岩に富む地層について岩相を詳細に検討した結果，４）これまで推定された陸棚外側の湧昇帯ではなく，陸縁の閉ざされた小規模盆地で堆積したこと、５）そこでカンブリア紀初期にSSF動物が急激に多様化したこと、そして６）その多様化の期間に生物生産性の指標である炭素同位体費が大きく変動したことが明らかになった。生命史の中の大事件である最初期動物多様化は、おそらく陸縁のリフト盆地でマントル起源の超アルカリ火山岩が露出していた場で進行したらしい。これは従来の推定と大きく異なる新しい解釈であり、この分野の研究方針を大きく変える可能性がある。
これらの成果は順次まとめられ、その一部は既に複数の学術論文として国際学術誌に投稿され、また国内外の学会で複数回口頭発表されつつある。未発表分も順次公表準備中である。
