高磁場fMRIによるヒト下側頭葉のコラム構造に関する研究

Research Abstract

有線外皮質において1mm以下の解像度でfMRI研究を行うことが困難であるのは、コラム構造を検出するために必要となるような高空間解像度で通常のfMRI計測を行う場合十分な信号雑音比が得られないことが主な原因である。下側頭皮質において問題は更に深刻で、標的領域が比較的深部にあるためRFコイルから遠ざかりMR信号減衰がすすむと同時に磁化率アーチファクトの影響(鼓室周辺の中空構造による)で更に減衰が早まる。下側頭皮質の信号雑音比を向上させるためにはまず、撮像パラメータの最適化、局所静磁場の均一性向上あるいは近年急速な発展を遂げたパラレルイメージング法を用いるなどの策を講じなければならない。十分な信号雑音比が得られるよう調整を行なった後、次の問題に着目したい。1)コラムレベルの解像度で下側頭皮質においてカテゴリー特異的な物体表現を解き明かす。とりわけ、顔選択コラムを描出することを試みる。顔選択領域は既にサルの下側頭皮質とヒトの下側頭皮質の一部である紡錘状回にあると報告されているので、我々の解き明かすべき機能構造の取りかかりとして理想的である。顔選択コラムは、単一電極記録と光計測法を組み合わせることにより示されたが、ヒトの下側頭皮質において顔選択コラムがいかなるスケールで空間分布しているのかという疑問に対しては未解決で論争途上にある。2)物体選択コラム内での表現規則について解き明かす。数多くの物体について調べる必要があるが、我々はここでも顔選択コラムに注目したい。特に、これらのコラムが個々の顔を有する人物に対して選択的であり、見え方(陰影や顔を見るアングル)によらないのかどうかを確かめたい。
