Research Abstract |
By compiling GIS related database of archaeological sites from the Jomon and Yayoi period, we elucidated 1)the non-linear development of residential system from the Jomon to the Yayoi period in western Japan, 2) relationship between population increase and social stratification in Okayama Prefecture, and 3)the problems with estimating population size based on the number of pit houses. Matsumoto also carried out excavations to obtain further information on prehistoric environment and settlement system. We described the shape of pottery quantitatively with Fourier function and applied principal component analysis. The result indicates that we may differentiate tenporal variation from other types of variations. We also constructed an agent-based simulation program for analyzing demographic and cultural changes and make it available on the website.
