太古代チャートの多種同位体と微量元素の地球化学:海洋環境と生命活動記録の解明

Research Abstract

オーストラリア北西部のPilbara地域で採取された、約34.6億年前のチャート及び約32億年前のチャート/縞状鉄鉱層の陸上掘削試料を用いて、太古代の海洋環境(例:酸化還元状態・成層構造・海底熱水活動の影響・海水温度)および微生物生命活動を制約することが、本申請研究の目的である。
平成20年度と21年度には、約34.6億年前のABDP試料及び約32億年前のDXCL-DP試料を各々約100試料について、粉末試料を制作して前処理を施し、高度分析装置であるICP-MSを用いて、無機元素分析を行った。その結果、膨大な量の高品質データが得られた。また、約50のチャート試料のケイ酸塩成分の酸素同位体分析を行い、同様に高品質データを得ることができた。平成22年度には、(1)以上のデータの詳細な検討を行って論文(Natureに投稿予定)を執筆し(共著者らが内部査読中)、(2)酸素同位体データに関しても論文原稿を執筆し、(3)鉄の同位体分析用の試料前処理をするために設計・設置したクリーンルームの整備および分析ラインの構築にとりかかった(修士論文のテーマとして学生を指導)。以上の他、論文発表も一流の国際誌(EPSL, Palaeo3等)に複数行った。
本研究は、研究代表者(山口)の従来の共同研究者らが同試料(約34.6億年前のABDP試料)を用いて行った関連研究(Hoashi et al.,2009)がNature Geoscienceに掲載される等、世界最先端で競争を行っているものであり、それと対をなす位置の本研究の意義は非常に高く、世界に先駆けて成果を発表することがとても重要である。
以上、研究開始3年目の昨年度も、以前に引き続き、申し分のない成果を挙げることができたと言える。
