| Research Abstract |
This study investigates into some basic notions of information structure from two distinct perspectives : formal pragmatics and cognitive pragmatics. In particular, the need for contrastive topic as an information-structural primitive and the role of givenness in the descriptions of (in)definiteness in English are critically examined. Implications for pedagogical English grammar are also discussed.
