Research Abstract

Automaticity Theory theorizes that, as readers' word recognition skills improve, their reading comprehension concomitantly increases. It is not clear, however, whether this scenario applies to reading in a second language. A recent diary study(Taguchi et al., 2012) suggests that a certain level of comprehension is needed in L2 readers for the theory to explain the relationship between word recognition and comprehension. Further quantitative research will confirm this scenario.
