This research explores the political processes in which the territory of Okinawa Prefecture was separated from Japan proper, placed under the administration of U.S. military forces, and reunited into Japan proper. It also examines how the territory of Okinawa Prefecture has been organized and reorganized politically by looking at various activities and discourses of local political parties, social movement organizations, and central and local governments. Through these investigations, revealed are the political processes of heterogenizing and homogenizing the territory of "Okinawa." The findings of this research will contribute to the theoretical and empirical deepening and international recognition of Japanese political geography.
