Research Abstract |
This article examined the development of tolerance in children and adolescents. The elementary school children, who typically demand others to conform to their in-groups, used moral principles when judge and accept others to their in-groups. The junior high school students are in the process of learning to judge others as they consider differences among others' characteristics. The university students are able to clearly distinguish and judge types of groups as well as characteristics of others. The tolerance to diversity among children and adolescents was associated with their interpersonal orientation towards groups and friends. The results of the study implied that an interaction with heterogeneous groups of people was likely to foster tolerance to diversity.
