Research Abstract |
Randomly selected community-based populations of 287 Japanese and 296 US men aged 40-49 were examined for intima-media thickness (IMT) of common carotid artery and coronary calcium in a previous survey. We measured plasma homocysteine and serum folate levels by stored blood sample. Plasma homocysteine levels are much lower in US participants than Japanese participants irrespective of more unfavorable subclinical atherosclerotic findings. Furthermore, we are not able to observe any relationship between plasma homocysteine or serum folate levels and above-mentioned subclinical atherosclerotic findings in both populations.
