16世紀のポルトガルに隠れユダヤ教徒が大量発生した理由は、マノエル一世がユダヤ人を強制的にキリスト教に改宗させながら、彼らの内面の信仰を黙認したことにある。マノエルの期待通り、彼らはポルトガルの海外膨張に貢献しただけでなく、アントウェルペン、アムステルダム、ロンドンに進出して植民主義の尖兵となった。文化的には、キリスト教徒を装った隠れユダヤ教徒として、割礼をせず、祈りの時に跪き、救済を個人的なものと考える、ユダヤ教徒らしからぬ雑種であった。
