Research Abstract

This is a study on musical aspects of Noh, especially two schools of Noh drum called KADONO and KO. I conducted surveys on KADONO and KO in several libraries, for example, Waseda University Theatre Museum, the Nogami Memorial Noh Theatre Research Institute of Hosei University, Morioka Central Public Hall, Library of Tokyo National University of fine arts, Tosa Yamauchi Family Treasure and Archives, and Libraries of Kanazawa City. Through this survey, a famous drum performer, Kyu'en Kawasaki's personal diary and his musical scores are discovered. They are considered valuable historical materials to study Noh musicians in 19 century.
