Research Abstract |
The agnyupasthana, "adoration of the sacred fires", is an obligatory rite for sacrificers performed after the evening agnihotra. Only few attempts have so far been made at this rite. The aim of this study is to examine MS I 5, treatment of the agnyupasthana. MS I 5,1-4 records the formulas for this rite and MS I 5,5-12 contains the corresponding brahmana. Mantras of MS I 5,1 are mentioned in MS I 5,5-6 separately. MS I 5,5 deals with a daily agnyupasthana performed after the evening agnihotra while MS I 5,6 treats the agnyupasthana, which should be performed once a year. In MS I 5,5 svarga-(heaven) is used as adjective likewise in RV, AV, YS's mantra-portion. From this fact it comes to know that MS's prose-portion belongs to an old stratum compared with other YSs. Again, I also dealt with an interesting story of the Manu's five sons described in MS I 5,8.
