Research Abstract

本年度は, 単層カーボンナノチゴーブ(SWNTs)の螺旋度(カイラリティ)とSWNTsの成長時間に関する相関を明らかにする目的で実験を行った. その結果, 成長したままの基板上の試料からの蛍光特性を直接観測することに成功した. 通常, カイラリティを特定することが可能な蛍光特性を測定するには, 化学的処理によりSWNTsを溶液中に孤立分散することが必要である, 分散効率の直径, カイラリティ依存性が報告されているため, 溶液中に分散した試料内の正確なカイラリティ分布の測定は困難であった. 本手法により成長したSWNTsは, あらかじめ孤立垂直配向形状を有しているため, 分散行程を必要とせず, 成長した試料本来のカイラリティ分布を蛍光特性から見積もることができる. この成果は極めて重要と言える. 次に, 本手法を用いて試料内のカイラリティ分布とプラズマ照射時間の相関を検討した結果, プラズマ照射時間を短くしていくにつれ, つまりSWNTsの成長時間が短くなるにつれて, 試料内のSWNTsのカイラリティ分布が狭まることが明らかとなった. この結果は, 成長初期では直径の小さなSWNTsが, その後直径の大きなSWNTsが成長する機構に基付いていると考えられる. 直径の小さなSWNTsに関レては, SWNTs先端のキーヤップ構造の安定性から安定に存在できるカイラリティ数が限られている. つまり成長時間制御により直径の小さなSWNTsのみを優先的に成長させたことで, 結果的に試料内のカイラリティばらつきが抑制できたと考えられる. カイラリティにより金属にも半導体にもなるSWNTsの特徴を考慮すると, この様な極端にカイラリティばらつきの少ない試料は, SWNTsのデバイス応用に向けて極めて有用である.
