Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In order to develop a new type of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) having columnar LC geometries, by using the technology of disk-rod hybrid columnar assembly realized by supramolecular polymerization in LC media, which is developed in Aida group, I started to synthesize an appropriate monomer. The synthesis of the monomer involves the incorporation of a bent-core molecular motif as a side chain of the core part of the monomer. In the core part, a hydrogen-bonding motif was employed.
This year, I have designed and synthesized a couple of different side-chains and core units for realizing the ferroelectric property. For the core units, bowl-shaped molecules having an appropriate bowl-inversion barrier were newly designed and synthesized. In this case, the ferroelectric property is given by the core unit. Therefore, the side chain units could be more simple. After coupling the sidechain and the core units, columnar LC is expected to be obtained and the ferroelectric columnar LC would be realized.
