2022 Fiscal Year Annual Research Report

New frontiers in dental microwear texture analysis: towards reconstruction of dinosaur paleoecology

Research Project

Project/Area Number 20F20325
Research InstitutionThe University of Tokyo

Principal Investigator

久保 麦野  東京大学, 大学院新領域創成科学研究科, 講師 (10582760)

Co-Investigator(Kenkyū-buntansha) WINKLER DANIELA  東京大学, 新領域創成科学研究科, 外国人特別研究員
Project Period (FY) 2020-11-13 – 2023-03-31
KeywordsTooth wear / diet reconstruction / microwear / dietary ecology / tribology
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Publication of four related research papers. The alligator feeding experiment and a feeding experiment with combined mechanical properties testing of foodstuffs were both published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. The budget was used for open access fees. Additionally, two papers on microwear in dinosaurs were published. The host and JSPS fellow were herewith the first to apply dental microwear texture analysis for diet reconstruction to dinosaurs. Leftover budget of the KAKENHI was used to purchase assorted chemicals for an ongoing project on sika deer dental anomalies. Genetic analyses will be conducted to elucidate whether observed agenesis of third molars is inherited through the X-chromosome.
