Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year, I was able to advance all the experiment series planned. I finished the first experiment series’ (understanding interference) stimuli creation and experimental code and started data collection. I also completed the second experiment series’ (modulating interference) data collection and the first series of analyses. I tested a total of 191 babies and 84 adults were tested in the IRCN Babylab, the RIKEN CBS Laboratory for Language Development, and the Miraikan Science Museum. The preliminary data from this experimental series incited me to forge a collaboration with the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, France. I also wrapped up a second collaboration that arose from experiment series two, again between Japan and France: the paper is in submission and the results have been accepted at the Workshop in Infant Language Development. I also completed stimuli creation, experiment coding and set up, as well as data collection for experiment series three (overcoming interference). It was a challenge to implement because it was standalone experiment (no experimenter, has to run autonomously) at the Miraikan Science Museum. Nearly 2000 people, aged 3 to 84 years old, participated in two experiments. I have also run preliminary analyses. I started working on a collaboration with the University of Oxford to build a model to interpret the data.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
There was a little bit of delay with the COVID-19 situation. In lab testing was slowed down or stopped during states of emergency. Testing possibilities affected the experiment protocols and which experiment series started first. Experiment series one will wrap up last because it was the most affected by the states of emergency. However, the delay is only by a couple months which is encouraging.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This year, I will be wrapping up projects. I will finish testing the first experiment series in June. The analyses and paper will then be written by the fall. I will finish the second experiment series analyses this month and will finish writing the paper (already started) in August. I will also wrap up the collaborative study in the early fall and submit the paper by the end of my term. I will complete the analyses and collaborative model for experiment series three by the fall so the paper can be submitted in October. I will be presenting 3 sets of results at international conferences and submitting a 4th to another international conference (the most prestigious in language development - BUCLD)
