Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this project, we investigated (1) which features of the learning environment cause interference during acquisition, (2) how they interfere and (3) to what extent they interfere, across age. In FY2021, to investigate (2), we ran two studies, one eye-tracking study in the laboratory (Barbir et al, 2022) and one online study with daycare staff (Crimon et al, 2022), and are running a collaborative extension of the study with participants in Paris. To investigate (3), we ran a bigdata study at the Miraikan Science Museum with participants aged 3-87 years old. This study is in data collection, with 2000 participants to date. Due to delays in testing because of the pandemic, we could not finish the studies in (2) within the fiscal year as planned and present and publish the results. However, we did this in FY2022 with the carry over budget from FY2021.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The projects are all in their final stages. We are currently working on writing up the articles for studies (1), (2), and (3). We are also wrapping up collaborative continuation of study (2) with collaborators in Paris, France. This continuation will help us understand how language learning varies across languages and cultures. The project had started slowly because of the pandemic which resulted in some funding needing to be moved from 2021 to 2022. However, we managed to almost fully catch up in 2022. We were not able to publish all the articles by the end of 2022, but the money reserved for publication fees was just the right amount to cover the unplanning expense of the testing computer breaking and needing replacement.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We plan to have all the articles submitted and to have our collaboration wrapped up within this fiscal year.
