Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the first half of FY2021 (roughly from April to November), I gave priority to holding or preparing conferences, and likewise to publishing or preparing articles. During the second half (roughly from December 2021 to March 2022), I gave priority to the preparation of my monograph (scheduled to be published in July 2022). From April 2021 to March 2022, I used the main portion of the KAKENHI research funds in the following ways: 1) I did pay annual fees to a number of literary associations and journals (on August 2021 and January 2022) such as Nihon Bungaku kai, Hnashin Kindai Bungaku kai, Aistugia etc., where I held conferences and published articles. 2) Upon writing articles’ drafts I did require, on two occasions (in August 2021 and March 2022) translations and language checks in different languages. This served multiple purposes: the first was for conferences and publications on literary platforms; the second, at a later stage, was to further extend and edit those writings in order to include them in my monograph (later published in July 2022). Overall this also allowed me to produce more studies at the same time while speeding up the time of production. 3) I should also mention that a significant portion of the funds was spent on purchasing a plurality of books related to Nakajima Atsushi, political history in Southeast Asia, literature, and history in general throughout the abovementioned period. Overall, the research funds allowed me to make conferences and publish articles and contributed to the publication of my monograph.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
During FY 2021 a held a number of conferences (both national and international) and published a number of articles as planned in my research project. In fact, I can say that my research project proceeded as planned. The only thing I wasn’t able to do was to go to a research trip to Micronesia. Although I had planned this research survey, due to the COVID pandemic situation at first I had to postpone it, however in the end I decided not to go. During this period the situation of the several states in Micronesia was very uncertain. I could have gone anyway if I wanted to, but there was no way of clarifying before departure if, once there, I would have been allowed to go visit exactly the places I needed to go to. This lack of clarity posed the risk of wasting public funds, so I didn’t go.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
By the end of FY2021, thanks to KAKENHI funds I purchased the necessary books for my research and had an article translated. I started working more consistently on the preparation of my monograph in this same period (roughly from January 2022) with the purpose of publishing it in July 2022. Toward the end of FY2021 I also began applying and preparing for future conferences and projects, such as the Aistugia conference of September 2022 and its related article, and the survey in Italy (Bologna University) on the recent situation of Nakajima’s studies in English and Italian.
