Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this research is to develop next-generation biomaterials in the fields of orthopedics and dentistry by creating a composite and combining natural and artificial materials having bioactivity and antibacterial properties with medical polymers (used in orthopedics and dentistry). In this research the polymer used was PMMA. By itself, it has the drawback of lacking biological activity and antibacterial properties. However, incorporating different concentration of a natural filler, curcumin, these properties could be improved. The choice of curcumin is due to its well-known anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Furthermore, some studies indicated how the systemic administration of curcumin significantly improved bone mineral density and trabecular bone architecture in vitro and in vivo tests. Adding different concentration, the properties of the composites have been evaluated usging different techniques and assays. Mechanical and indentation tests showed that PMMA with a high addition of curcumin experienced a clear reduction of the performances compared to the other composites and the untreated PMMA. No relevant variation in surface roughness was detected suggesting that the differences preponderally derived from a chemical interaction between cells and material surface modified with the filler. The most important result was that increasing the concentration of curcumin increased the amount of bone formed on the surface of the composite, suggesting that the rate of formation was dependent on the amount of filler present.
