Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The research is focused on analysing how the institutions and governance capacity shape the choices and implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) localization strategies. The work done in FY3 focused on analysing the data obtained through the interview surveys on multi-stakeholder engagement by urban local bodies in India. I used the results, coupled with the earlier research on Voluntary National Reviews of various countries, to develop a policy brief on multi-stakeholder engagement for advancing the localisation of SDGs in the Asia-Pacific countries. During this period, the fellow also worked upon a brief study on the land-use planning in the peri-urban areas of the large metropolitan cities in India, and how this impacts the process of working towards attaining multiple targets under the SDGs. The findings from this were presented at the 5th World Planning School Congress, Bali. The fellow was also involved in drafting a report on ‘Situation analysis of Thailand focusing on climate governance (political ecology and environmental policy)’.
Through this study, a theoretical construct was developed on how the development planning strategies can be supported to align the planning processes with SDGs. From the final results of all the forementioned studies, the main factors hindering effective SDG localization, with a focus on SDG 11, will be deduced; and strategies will be proposed to adapt development planning processes to SDG targets through institutional strengthening and improved stakeholder engagement.
