細胞内外の温度が1度異なるという実験結果に対して、計算では10の-5乗度しか違わないという10の5乗ギャップ問題に対して、蛍光プローブを用いないラベルフリーで細胞温度を計測する手法、特にラマン分光による局所温度測定と、赤外ポンプ-可視プローブ法による熱拡散を可視化する計測手法を開発し、温度生物学を推し進める。
ラマン分光のストークス-アンチストークス光の強度比を用いて細胞内の温度計測を試みるという独創的な研究計画であり、実現すれば蛍光分子を用いることなく温度計測ができるため、これまでの蛍光プローブによる実験における疑念を解消できることになり、生物物理学に大きなインパクトを与えることが期待される。
