応募者が報告したCRISPRの基礎生物学の推進を目指し、これまでに応募者が参画し、作製、整備してきた海洋メタゲノムデーターベースを用いることで、未知のCRISPR-Casを推定し、その機能の解明や、新規CRISPR-Casの知見を新技術開発に活用することを目指した研究である。
自然界には未知微生物が多数存在しており、未知CRISPRや未解明の機能の存在が十分に考えられ、特色ある課題である。未同定で新規機能を有するCRISPR-Casが明らかとなれば学術的な意義と共に、新たなゲノム編集ツールの開発につながる可能性もあり、科学技術等への波及も大きい。
