Outline of Annual Research Achievements

・連続融解法によるドームふじ氷床コアの分析
未だ世界的にも分析例の存在しない最終氷期より古い時代を対象として、南極ドームふじ氷床コアの分析を推進した。具体的には、最終氷期の海洋同位体ステージ3(氷期の中間的な気候)と比較研究するために、前々回の氷期(海洋同位体ステージ6)の5万年弱の期間を選定した。本分析結果には、従来の個別試料の分析結果には見られない突然の気候変動を示唆するシグナルが多数見られ、それらは最終氷期のダンスガード・オシュガー振動と類似した変動パターンであると推定したが、一方で、最終氷期のイベントと比較して短期間かつ振幅が小さい変動が多いといった違いも見られた。

・連続融解メタン分析手法の検証と改良
超純水と標準ガスを用いたメタン濃度のキャリブレーションについては、複数のコアや深度の試料を用いてCFAデータと個別試料の分析データを比較した結果、キャリブレーション後の濃度が個別試料分析の値より約4%低く出ることと、この過小評価の度合いが場合により変化することを発見した。キャリブレーションに用いる超純水を冷やす試みを行ったところ、補正後のデータが個別試料の値に近づいたことから、原因の一部は水の温度にあることが推察された。また、アイスコアの空気含有状態(気泡、ハイドレート)や圧力も関係ある可能性があることから、異なるコアの分析により今後検討が必要である。また、ドームふじコアの大深部の分析に向けたメタン濃度計測器の導入の検討を行った。そのため、新たな装置の導入を進めている海外の共同研究者からの関連情報の収集と議論を行った。

概要で述べたように、試験や実試料の分析が順調に進んでおり、前々回の氷期における突然の気候変動の様相を詳細に把握できるデータを得ることができた。また、深度分解能をさらに高めるための測器については、共同研究者の経験を踏まえて慎重に検討すべく情報収集を行っているなど、進展している。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

ドームふじコアの分析については、2500mより深い深度の分析を行い、古い時代の氷期と間氷期の一部について、分析手法の限界の評価と古環境変動の復元を目的としたデータを取得する。また、連続融解メタン分析手法の改良については、ドームふじコアの深部の分析データと同深度範囲の個別試料分析を実施し比較することや、分解能の高い測器の導入に向けた調査と検討を行う。
