Outline of Final Research Achievements

Comprehensive research on the Inter-connections between classical Japanese literature and Buddhist Preaching (Shodo) Culture was conducted. In order to spread Buddhism, preachers wielded their eloquence and told various stories. They also used painting, music, and performing arts. By combining the efforts of researchers of various genres, we have shown that Buddhist Preaching Culture had a great influence on Japanese classical literature, including Waka Poetry and Monogatari(Tales) as well as Songs and Noh plays.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

この数十年で、平安時代の末以降に書き残された唱導資料の発掘と研究が進み、唱導とそれに関係する諸文化（仏教儀礼とそれに関係する絵画や音楽、諸芸能）に光が当てられるようになった。これにより、唱導文化という側面から、日本の古典文学の性質を見ていくことが可能になった。本研究は、和歌・物語・歌謡・能など複数のジャンルの文学が唱導文化と深く関わりながら生み出されてきたことを明らかにした。これは、日本の古典文学が持つ性質を的確に理解していくための新たな道筋の一つを切り開いた意義を持つ。
