| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Using data from a 2017 survey of Japanese academic profession, we analyzed the characteristics of university academic profession's social service activities and found three points.
①The amount of time spent on social service activities per week varied widely, from 0 hours to 65 hours, with the average number of hours being approximately 3 hours. ②The most frequent activities were "lectures," "joint research and publication," and "participation in external committees." ③The characteristics of academic profession who spend a lot of time engaged in social service activities are male, over 50 years old, and in the social sciences, agricultural sciences, and medicine/health sciences and the characteristics of their organizations were "there are competent leadership", "the organization's mission is emphasized" and "decisions are made through a collegial system".

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
日本の大学教員の主な専門的活動は、研究活動と教育活動であり、社会サービス活動は多くの大学教員にとってマイナーな活動である（平均1週間に3時間程度）。その中でも、主な社会サービス活動は、「講演」「共同研究や共同出版」「外部委員会への参加」であった。
社会サービス活動時間数が長い大学教員について調べたところ、50歳代以上のシニア男性教員で、専門分野は、社会科学系、農学系、医学・健康科学系であった。なお日本の大学教員の社会サービス活動が国際的に低調なことは、大学が社会との協力関係や国際化推進などの点でいまだ積極的段階を実現していない証左であるから、今後の大学改革や大学教員の意識改革を喚起する。
