Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of the project is to understand the career ambitions, support needs, and job-hunting outcomes of domestic and international students in EMI programs at Japanese universities. In the 2021 academic year, the project began collecting data from career support professional working for universities and in the private sector. The overall picture emerging from the data shows that domestic EMI students do not differ significantly from their mainstream Japanese-medium counterparts in their job-hunting experiences. For international students, studying in an EMI program often leads to a lack of Japaneses language proficiency, which is a significant hurdle in job-hunting. Many have ambitions to stay and work in Japan but are unable to do so.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
In the 2022 academic year, the project was significantly behind schedule due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Travel restrictions made it difficult to conduct site visits to gather data. Online solutions were possible but they were an imperfect substitute.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the 2022 academic year, the project will continue to collect data from career support stakeholders and analyze that data. Based on those findings, survey and interview instruments for phase two (collecting data from students currently in the job-hunting process) will developed and tested
