Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The project goal is to understand career ambitions and outcomes of EMI students in Japanese universities. In FY2022, the project focused on the role of career support professionals. Data was collected from university career center staff and representatives of relevant NPOs and private sector actors in surveys, interviews, and observations. Results indicate that EMI students face considerable hurdles, especially due to their low Japanese-language proficiency and lack of understanding of the job-hunting system. Planned and focused career-planning and job-hunting support is widely available for Japanese-medium program students but for EMI, support still depends on the ad hoc efforts of dedicated individuals. However, effective support systems are now emerging.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The project is somewhat behind schedule. There were considerable delays in the first 2 years of the project due to the covid-19 pandemic and restrictions on movement for data collection. Online data collection was possible to some extent but it was not a perfect substitute. In FY 2022, movement was freer and data collection proceeded more openly.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY 2023, the project will shift to collecting student voices. Survey and interview data will be collected from EMI students in the process of job hunting, or those who have recently finished. Spring 2023: Distribution of pilot surveys, revisions as required, full distribution. Summer 2023: Analysis of survey data, recruiting interview participants. Fall 2023: Interview data collection. Fall and Winter 2023: Interview data analysis, follow-up interviews. FY 2023 will also feature publication of the FY 2022 results, with presentations at 3 conferences, 2 journal articles and 1 book chapter.
